CHOOSING A PC
With the huge number of PC manufacturers and models from Compaq pcs
to IBM pcs and the highly technical computing jargon used by sales
staff to "blind you with science" many PC consumers are
becoming techno phobic when it comes to PC shopping . But you need
to ask the right questions to get what you need , instead of a lemon
.If all you ever want to do is write simple text documents you can
get by with a bog standard barebones PC buy even a second hand computer
on Ebay and you should be happy - no need for the fast Penitums -
but make sure it has a decent word processor package included , we
suggest microsoft word 6.0 you can get new PCs for under £100
If you also want to surf-the-net then a low - mid range pc will suffice
providing of course it has an internal modem (go for atleast a 56K
modem - not the 28K modems - else you’ll spend a lifetime waiting
for downloads to complete !) You can of course get broadband which
operates at speeds in the megabyte range many times faster , in any
event a bog standard medium spec PC is required , you should be able
to get something for under £300 ( but make sure it has the basics
- USB port if you want broadband etc.)If you are a computer games
player , like playing 3d adventure games and virtual simulations then
a fast computer is a must , or your gaming experience will suffer
. More and more complex games are being developed and require more
and more RAM memory (random access memory) / faster hard drives /
larger capacity hard drives , faster 3d graphics boards and faster
processors , to keep up and get smooth graphics go for the higher
end (but don’t buy the fastest processor unless you have bottomless
pockets usually the second best processor is almost as good and at
half the price !) Roughly every year storage doubles and costs half
! (In the 1980s the first computer - Commodore VIC 20 Pet and Sinclair
ZX / Spectrums started with 20K of memory ! Expect to pay atleast
£500 upwards
Computer whizzes and development professionals also need high specification
workstations and often will go for the highest spec laptops , they
know time is money , and can afford the most expensive computers ,
saving on cheaper PCs is a false economy. A laptop can be used on
the move you can hot desk with them or use them on the train , and
with the latest tft screens and infra red ports / integral dvds /
soundcards they are packing the technology in , but there is a price
to pay - for the same quivalent desktop laptops cost about twice as
much ! You are paying for the convenience of portable computing with
a laptop. Expect to pay £900 upwards for a decent workstation or double
that for a network server ...WHERE TO GO For all
price bands PCWorld can help
You can buy from them and collect instore too (or use the cheap
home delivery service ). |
